China’s Change 4 Landing To Be A Stepping Stone For Future Explorations

China’s spacecraft, Chang’e-4, revolving the moon is to get ready for its 1st landing on moon’s farther side. This mission inspire of being a backup of the Chang’e-3 which landed in 2013, Chang’e-4’s January landing on moon’s farther side will be definitely a milestone to the missions of moon’s exploration by robots.

Director of the European Space Agency’s International Lunar Exploration Working Group, Bernard Foing, said that Chang’e-4 uses much more powerful instruments. He added that this mission will validate technologies that have been used for advanced operations of rovers, landing and communications to the farther side in space.

Communication between the China’s tracking stations and Chang’e-4 on moon’s farther side will be made easier by Queqiao, a transmission satellite that has 4.2m diameter antenna that was launched by China in May. This satellite was launched to revolve the 2ndLagrange point of earth-moon which is actually moon’s farther side.

BUP (Brown University in Providence) Rhode Island’s planetary scientist, James Head, said that this step is absolutely significant. He added that being confident in farther side landings ensures boost for exploring opportunities for other targets and basic scientific results, he added.

Accessing ‘Luna Incognita’, Chang’e-4 can be described as a game-changer and can be compared to the voyages of Columbus in exploring the world, said James Head.

According to a research presented at the International Symposium on Lunar and Planetary Science 2018 in China, in June, one of the NSSC (National Space Science Center) scientists Zou Yongliao, mentioned that an important task of Change-7, scheduled for 2021 launch, is to find water ice and define its traces in areas that are permanently shadowed. Future missions will be including technology validation tests and in-site resource utilization.

Change 4 uses state of the art algorithm that gives it a greater descent vertically, leaving a smaller footprint than the previous missions.
